Dust mite
"But my carpets don't look dirty"
Well, guess what.....................
Even if you don't think your carpets and furnishings need to be
thoroughly cleaned, they do.
On average there are over two million
dust mites feeding on dead skin scales in every home! They hide in
your carpets, upholstery, rugs, mattress and pillows.
Mites can double their numbers in ten hours and produce ten to
twenty pieces of
faeces per day. A gram of house dust
(approximately half a teaspoon) contains as many as
1,000 dust
mite, that same gram of dust mite can hold
250,000 of their faecal
pellets.
The development of the house dust mite from an egg to an adult
takes just
three to four weeks. Adults live for about six weeks
during which time the females produce
forty to eighty eggs.
Dust mites survive by
eating dead skin cells, which make up to 80%
of house dust. They also live off water vapour, which we provide for
them through perspiring and breathing, approximately one pint per
person
per night.
House dust mite are found in virtually all homes, no
matter
how clean. They live in the dust that
accumulates in your carpets fabrics, furniture and
bedding.
A primary source of dust mite exposure in the home is
in the bedroom, which provides the best conditions of
humidity, warmth and food for their growth. The
average room can be infested by millions of
microscopic dust mites.
They are present in carpets, upholstered furniture,
curtains, mattresses, pillows, blankets and similar
fabrics.
Asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis are the three main
allergic diseases where the cause of most attacks has
been linked to the house
dust mite allergen.
It is not only the dust mite that causes the problem. The
allergen which causes asthma attacks, allergies and
eczema is actually a
protein found in their droppings
and their carcasses. In the average house these
allergens get expelled into the air, once airborne dried
dust mite droppings are
easily inhaled into our airways
causing
allergic reactions such as wheezing, coughs,
itchy eyes, sniffles, and in more serious cases, asthma,
eczema, and allergic rhinitis.
Over the past twenty years or so allergies such as
asthma have been causing more and more of us to
experience those
uncomfortable symptoms of allergen
sensitivity.
T
he facts are, clean every six to eighteen months
before traffic lanes begin to appear, your carpets and
furnishings  will last
far longer and look much better,
any build up of allergens that cause asthma and/or
respiratory and allergic problems get
removed so you
will
breathe easier too. If you or a loved one are suffering
from any of these symptoms
Masterclean® operatives
come prepared with the latest anti-allergy treatments to
keep your home
dust-mite free for over twelve months.
These allergy problems are truly a very good reason to regularly clean your carpets and furnishings, but a few
more still remain.
Each day we pull
pounds and pounds of sandy soil out of the base of carpets and furnishings. It's in yours too!
Spread the yarns apart and look deep. It's grinding those expensive yarns into fibres which fill up your vacuum bag,
leading to your carpets and furnishings
wearing out faster.
Oily residues
from the street and the air get deposited in your carpets and onto your upholstery every day. These
sticky residues
attract other types of dirt onto your carpets and furnishings. These soils bond to fibres and fabrics
through a process called
oxidisation eventually becoming permanently attached causing colour and texture
change.
The longer you wait between cleans the more likely it is that these soils will become impossible to remove causing
permanent damage to your carpets and furnishings.
German Study Declares Carpet the Healthy Flooring Option
An independent study undertaken by the Germany Asthma and Allergy Foundation (DAAB) and the German
Society for Environment and Indoor Analysis was recently completed and the findings of the study proved
conclusively that the indoor air in a carpeted room was of much better quality than that in rooms with smooth
floors.

The study looked at the content of fine dust particles in the air over smooth floors in 186 rooms and over carpet
in 104 rooms. The findings showed that the indoor air in a carpeted room contained less than half the amount of
fine particulate dust than in rooms with smooth floors. Indeed, the dust level over a smooth floor at 62.9
micrograms per cubic metre was found to be higher than the recommended European Standard.

The findings come on the back of other recent independent research which has supported the carpet industry’s
claims that carpet is the healthy flooring option. There are several studies in the open literature that would
support that conclusion and many of them can be found on CRI’s website carpet- health.org.
